About Home Care Packages.

As well as relishing in retirement and enjoying more free time, growing older often initiates a decline in health and mobility. This shouldn’t mean older Australians need to leave the home they love to receive the support they need. The government deems ageing at home a cost-effective option to aged care, and provides funding for home care services.

How Can I Access Home Care Services?

The Australian government provides funding through two schemes to older people living at home. Entry level support is funded by the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP). The other option for those with greater needs is funded by a Home Care Package.

To receive a Home Care Package, you will need to find out if you are eligible. Then you can apply for a face-to-face assessment. This can be done online at myagedcare.gov.au or over the phone by calling 1800 200 422.

About Home Care Packages

Eligibility for a Home Care Package will depend on your circumstances. Your age, health, situation at home, and any support you currently receive are all factors that will be considered. If you are aged 65 years or older (or 50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people), you may be asked:

  • Has there has been a change in what you can do or remember?
  • Have you been diagnosed with a medical condition?
  • Do you have reduced mobility due to health reasons?
  • Is there a change in family care arrangements?
  • Have you had a recent fall or hospital admission?

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the above, you may be eligible to receive a Home Care Package for aged care services.

After your face-to-face assessment, you will receive a letter notifying you of your Home Care Package outcome. About three months prior to your Home Care Package becoming available, you will receive another letter. Use this time wisely to find a provider of Home Care Package services.
